Worms Cathedral Alter

Client: Pfarrgruppe Dom St. Peter und St. Martin
Location: Worms, Germany
Design: Anna Heringer und Martin Rauch
Execution: Lehm Ton Erde Baukunst GmbH

I had the opportunity to contribute to the realization of a rammed earth altar, the winning entry in an invited competition by Anna Heringer and Martin Rauch. My role involved managing the execution of the altar, which was built with the active participation of the community.

This project was driven by a longing for silence, peace, contemplation, simplicity, and security—qualities embodied in the very material used: earth. Loam, in its raw form, represents both beginning and end, a continuous cycle, and carries an inherent sense of elemental security and responsibility.

A key aspect of the project was the collective building process, reflecting the vision of both the designers and the congregation. The hands-on participation of the community strengthened the communal spirit and became a powerful symbol of a living and engaged church community.

This altar is more than just a structure—it is a shared experience, a tangible expression of faith, unity, and the deep connection between people, material, and place.
